Leonardo Divinci

If I had a time machine, one person I would have to travel back in time to meet would be Leonardo Da Vinci. Da Vinci as we know was a great painter. He has also envisioned many items we take for granted today. He had the first anatomic drawing of a human being. It was in use for nearly 200 years.

He sketched the first ball bearings, roller bearings and needle bearings, with out which many of our machines today would not operate. He envisioned the first submarine and cross bow. He also had the first thoughts as how to correct your vision. Using water filled bags on your eyes. Sound familiar? He thought of the first contact lens. Amazing!!

New Look Vision is proud to announce we now carry contact lenses! We carry all major brands.

When you need contacts, order on line or call us!

The Partial Brilliance of Anti-Reflective Coating

Blog No Comments

We often think of an anti-reflective coating as something of a new product.  That idea is only partially correct.     In reality Mother Nature was the first to develop an anti-reflective coating.  A moth’s eye has a natural nano structured film.  This allows the moth to see in the dark, without reflection.

The first human to discover this was Lord Raleigh. He discovered the first simple form of anti-reflective coating in 1886.  The optical glass of the time tended to tarnish with age.  Lord Raleigh discovered that an old glass lens that had tarnished transmitted more light than a new lens.

Zeiss optical had been working on the anti-reflective coatings for many years.  They had applied it to many telescopes, binoculars and other optical equipment.  It was a closely guard secret until after WWII.

Today there are many types and manufactures of anti-reflective coatings.  At New Look Vision we use some of the best coatings available.

How to Avoid Eye Strain

Blog No Comments

Most people are doing more close work than ever be-fore.  The increase in computers, tablets, smart phones has increased the amount of eye strain we experience.  This can be felt as a headache, sore eyes, and redness of the eyes or even a feeling of being tired or all of the above.

The first action we should do is go to our Optometrist or Ophthalmologist.  If we are not seeing as clearly as possi-ble that also can cause the problems mentioned above.  Assuming we have gone to our eye care professional, a great little tip I learned was the rule of “20, 20, and 20 “.  For every twenty minutes of close work you do give your eyes a rest by looking at something at least twenty feet away for a minimum of twenty seconds.  This helps to ease and avoid the eye strain.

When we are working on our electronic devices we tend to stare at our screens without blinking.  Blinking is very important to the health of our eyes.  It is a pumping mech-anism to remove deoxygenated tears and bring oxygen rich tears.  It also helps to keep our eyes moist.  So when you are on the computer, don’t forget to blink!

Clearly the Best

The idea of using something to magnify text goes back all the way to 100 BC, where a Roman philosopher noted that looking through a glass of water made the text underneath it larger. Later, the infamous Emperor Nero (the guy who burned Rome down while playing the fiddle) used this earlier observation to his advantage, and would hold a large cut emerald up to his eye and look through it to help him watch the gladiators.

To see your next gladiatorial games or sporting event clearly, come to New Look Vision.
